Good Carbs v Bad Carbs

Oats Natural Superfood

There is a lot of confusion about carbohydrates and whether they are good for you, can cause weight etc. and as a result they tend to be viewed in a negative way.  Some carbohydrates are very good and some are not so good. They are the body’s primary fuel source and therefore vital for optimal performance. It is important, however, to understand the difference between ‘good carbs’ and ‘bad carbs’.

Good carbs known as non-refined sources of carbohydrates in general will break down slowly in the body and give a prolonged release of energy over a period of time. They contain the fibre naturally found in foods and are therefore high in fibre, loaded with nutrients and will help us feel fuller for longer. This is good for keeping energy levels consistent preventing cravings and allowing you to perform at your best. These slow release carbohydrates should make up about 40-50% of your daily nutritional intake, and they should be included in each meal. An example of the best type of carbohydrates to eat are, Oats, fruit and veg, nuts, brown rice, sweet potatoes and whole grains.

Refined carbs have been processed and had the fibre stripped out, so you end up feeling hunger more quickly. They are usually lacking in essential nutrients, in other words they contain empty calories. They are generally fast releasing high sugary foods which can lead to dips in energy levels, cravings and fatigue much more quickly. It is recommended to keep these foods to a minimum as they can impact on your overall performance.

Despite what some crazy fad diets say, carbs are a great source of slow release energy allowing you to perform at your best.
